Digital Salon – Tips to Take Before and After Shots of your Clients

In our first digital salon post we looked at the strengths and opportunities of key social media platforms, now it’s time to dive into the content. This post specifically focuses on building your confidence in taking before and after hair shots of your clients.

Remember: social media platforms are increasingly being used by hairdressing salons for the acquisition of new clientele – and day after day your salon team are creating beautiful styles and head-turning colours... so why not maximise on this opportunity through free social media marketing!?

One of the easiest (and highly effective) ways to show off your work is through sharing before and after shots of your clients on your salon's Instagram and Facebook pages e.g.:

Before & After
  • Step 1: Snap a before shot
  • Step 2: Colour or style using the latest Schwarzkopf Professional products
  • Step 3: Snap an after shot
  • Step 4: Share your content on social media (remember to use relevant hashtags e.g. #madetocreate)

Pro tips for taking before/after shots:

  • Make sure your clients/co-workers agree to being in your photo
  • Use portrait mode – it works better for this kind of shot and you may wish to combine two images into one later down the line
  • Show your salon at its best e.g. make sure to show only the most important elements in your photo
  • Think about the background behind your subject (avoid messy scenes or bright white walls)
  • Lighting is your new best friend! Great light means great pictures – just make sure you avoid taking pictures against it
  • Be sharp! Pay attention to the picture sharpness as no one likes a blurry image
Encourage a smile! Happiness is contagious and your clients should love their new do!
  • #nofilter – potential clients need to see real skills/colours to be able to trust in your services!
  • Ask your client what their social media handle is – they are more likely to engage with your post if you tag them in it too!

Hint: use apps like Pic Stitch or Layout from Instagram to create a before and after collage picture. Alternatively use the slideshow image option on Instagram and encourage users to 'swipe left to see more'. This also provides extra engagement on your post!

Finally urge your colleagues and clients to like, comment and share your before/after post, as particularly on Instagram the quicker engagement happens, the more reach your post is likely to have!
